Samba, Rock & Soul a la Mocotó (From the 21st century to forever)

Thirty years have passed between the release of the debut album by Brazil’s Trio Mocotó in 1971 and this latest opus, and it proved to be worth the wait. Mocotó’s super-original grooves and vocals, their innovative power and tremendous humor and charm are still intact. They are back at full strength and ready to make Brazil and the whole world listen, smile and dance.
I can still vividly remember the early ’70s in São Paulo, hearing ‘Coqueiro Verde’ on the radio. What a smash hit it was! The introduction sounded like a soundtrack for a cartoon and the arrangement blended everything: samba, rock, electric guitars and cuicas, co-existing in a new and contagious rhythm. Even though I was only seven years old I thought it was amazing.
Everything was permitted on Planet Mocotó. The norm was happiness, freedom and an overwhelming sense of musical adventure, without barriers or preconceived ideas. The repertoire, apart from several of their own originals, included songs by simply the finest writers, from Roberto and Erasmo Carlos to Toquinho and Vinícius, Ary Barroso to Burt Bacharach, Jorge Ben to Tim Maia. All very bouncy, groovy and full of that unique Mocotó flavor.
I would like to thank here (in the name of all admirers – old and new), João, Fritz and Nereu for this new collection of sonic pearls. My thanks go to Maurício Tagliari for piloting this journey through time and for recreating the magic, and to the musicians for their talents and dedication. And, all of us will forever be thankful to Suba for his endless commitment to this project, for his friendship and vision, and for his deep love of Brazil. Much Peace!
To reminisce is to live! Play it loud!
Béco Dranoff, August 2001.
